Hi there! I am your instructor, Lynne Stiegler. If you want to know more about who I am and how I came to be interested in this subject, take a look at my biography on the home page for this course.
Over the next few weeks we will be taking a journey through the basics of multimedia to prepare you for your WOW examination. Before you start this class, you will need to obtain the course text, Multimedia: Making It Work by Tay Vaughan (2001, Osborne/McGraw Hill). You'll also need to make sure that your computer can handle multimedia both in real time and from the Web. It goes without saying that you'll need Internet access for the duration of the courser.
To get the most from this course, you should know how to write HTML and design web pages before you start. Otherwise, many of the terms and concepts are going to fly right over your head. WOW offers courses on those subjects as well.
You should expect to spend approximately five (5) hours on each of the course units, some a bit more and some a bit less. The total course is designed to be taught over 25 hours. Please make sure you have allowed enough time in your schedule to complete the assignments for the course. You will have access to this course for two months after registration. Longer access will have to be arranged with instructor.
This course is conducted completely over the Web. The instructor will communicate with the student via email, or utilizing online chat as required and scheduled. The instructor will generally reply to any student emails within twenty-four hours, usually sooner, unless the instructor notifies you of an upcoming delay. Chat can be scheduled between instructor and student, at the convenience of each.
Students who pass this course will have been exposed to the knowledge required to pass the current WOW Apprentice Multimedia examination.
For course refund availability, please refer to WOW policy.
Grading will be based 25% on quiz scores and 75% on assignments completed. Grades will be assigned as follows:
A |
91-100% |
B | 81-90% |
C | 71-80% |
F | Below 71% |
The text for this course, Multimedia: Making It Work by Tay Vaughan (2001, Osborne/McGraw Hill), was designed to be a complete college course on the subject of multimedia. It will serve as a good reference both now, for this course, and should you decide to go on into doing mutlimedia yourself. However, the course outline was not based on the book, so we are going to do some jumping around.
Supplementary materials will come from the Web itself. I will endeavor to check all links weekly, but if a student runs across a broken link, the nature of the Web being what it is, please send me an email right away. You will also be sent a course CD with all programs required for use in the lessons, plus brief multimedia instructional videos on some lesson material.
If you can...please send me a picture of yourself. The web is inherently an impersonal medium, and since we have to work together for some weeks and you can see me (via my webcam), it's only fair that I be able to see you, right? This is not a requirement, only a request. Thanks!
